The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”
— Numbers 21:8-9
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
— John 3:14-15
1500 years after it was written, the meaning of Numbers 21:8 was revealed by Jesus Christ. The people who were snake bitten had only to look at the snake on the pole to be cured– no deeds, no works.
Jesus was lifted up on the cross as the snake was lifted up on the pole. The snake represents sin. The snake was the reason the people in the desert were sick. Sin is the reason WE are sick. Just as the people in the desert could do no works or deeds to cure themselves, we can do no works or deeds to cure ourselves. The people in the desert needed only the faith to look to the snake for their cure. We need only the faith to look to Jesus for our cure. Jesus BECAME sin for us, and took the full judgment sin deserves.
God made him who had no sin TO BE SIN FOR US, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
— 2 Corinthians 5:21
