America in the Bible

Romans 8:28 On A National Level

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. ~ Romans 8:28

I saw an advertisement for a TV show about the Hindenburg blimp disaster. Most of us have seen photos of this giant airship in flames above Lakehurst, NJ. Therefore, when we think of the Hindenburg, it usually brings to mind images like this:

However, after seeing the TV ad for the show about the Hindenburg, I will forever call to mind another image when thinking of that famous blimp. As the advertisement displayed vintage film clips of the Hindenburg, one clip jumped out at me. To my shock, right there on the TV screen, was old footage of the Hindenburg flying above the good ole’ USA with giant swastikas on its tail fins!!! I could not believe it.

All I could think was, “why in the world did President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (often referred to by his initials, “FDR”) allow a Nazi aircraft to fly freely over America?” Not only was the Hindenburg allowed to fly repeatedly in American airspace, but the Hindenburg’s American docking station was not at some private airport outside the control of FDR. No, the Hindenburg docked at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, a military facility directly under the control of Commander-in-Chief, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

I have written on this website before how the socialist American President, FDR (a Democrat), did not help the Jewish people as Hitler’s National Socialists (Nazis) terrorized them. But wait, maybe FDR did not know what was going on inside Nazi Germany during the 1930s. Maybe FDR allowed the Hindenburg to make itself at home at a U.S. military base because the U.S. had no idea what Hitler was doing. Well, think again.

Nazi exploits were splashed across American headlines throughout the 1930s. We knew full well what was going on. Yet, the U.S. (under Democrat FDR) not only did not stop the Nazis from terrorizing God’s chosen people (the Jews), but the U.S. actually carried on a relationship with Hitler and his National Socialists. This could have turned out very badly for the U.S.

I will bless those who bless you [“you” refers to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob– that is, the Hebrew people]and whoever curses you I will curse… Genesis 12:3

We dodged a bullet. God did not curse America despite the evil she flirted with. This brings us back to Romans 8:28.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. ~ Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 applies not just to individuals, but to nations as well. Even when “those who love God” are within a nation that spits in God’s face, “those who love God” are assured that “all things work together for good to those who love God.” This reminds me of what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham bargained with God to not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. God’s final offer was that if there were just ten righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah, then God would not bring destruction. Since we know what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah, we can deduce that there were not even ten righteous people in those cities.

Fast forward to America. FDR played footsie with Hitler prior to World War II. Our current president plays footsie with the Muslim Brotherhood. We banned the Bible from public school. We cleansed our history of its Christian heritage. We legalized abortion. We demand more and more dependence on government, and less and less dependence on God. We banned the God of the Bible from the public square. We have parades that celebrate sin and flaunt it in God’s face. The God of the Bible is mocked in our media. By appearances, it seems we would have worn out our welcome with God. I thought by now we would have been smoked. I thought by now we would have collapsed under God’s judgment. Yet, here we are.

Not only do we survive, we actually thrive. Our super market shelves are dizzyingly full with choices, so much so that’s its actually annoying. Our restaurant menus offer so many choices, that it’s actually a burden to decide what to eat. These are the “problems” we have??? This nation is so blessed that it defies belief if one stops to ponder it. Yet we deserve none of it. In fact, we deserve the opposite. We deserve the crushing weight of God’s judgment upon us, but it just doesn’t seem to come.

I have mentioned on this website before that there is something peculiar about America. Try as we may, we can’t shake God’s blessing. Try as we may, we can’t shake his grace. It seems to be stuck to us, which brings me back to Sodom and Gomorrah. Those two cities were destroyed because God could not find even ten righteous people. Now, let’s consider America. Yes, we have committed all the sins I mentioned earlier, but we also have churches that are overflowing, missionaries dispatched all over the world, Christian radio, Christian television, and Christian websites. We have Bible studies and prayer groups. In short, we have the righteous remnant God was looking for before he rained fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Not raining fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah would have been mercy. Not raining fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah, and raining full supermarket shelves and voluminous dinner menus on Sodom and Gomorrah would have been grace. Do you see where I am going with this? America is clearly the recipient of God’s grace, and continues to be so despite bucking like a wild bronco to break free of God’s chains.

Why do the nations [including the USA] conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth [presidents, including the president of the USA] take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One [Jesus Christ]. “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs… ~ Psalm 2:1-4

God is actually laughing at America’s attempt to throw off its Christian heritage. Somehow, in God’s providence, it is all working together for good to “those who love God,” that is, to his remnant– the people in those American churches, in those American bible studies, those Americans who still love God, and there are a LOT of us! Take another look at Romans 8:28.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. ~ Romans 8:28

America was, and is, called according to God’s purpose, and that is why she lives on. In World War II, God put his hooks into America’s jaws and turned us toward the European continent to crush Hitler and liberate the Jews– even though FDR, of his own volition, had no such intention. God will repeat this in World War III, but the enemy will be Islamic, and the land will be the Middle East. Prior to World War III, America will not only not oppose the Antichrist, but if current trends continue, America will actively court the Antichrist’s affection— just like FDR did with the mini-Antichrist named Adolf Hitler.

But will America receive grace after being used by God (being “called according to his purpose”) in World War III? If World War II is indeed a foreshadowing of World War III, then we should look for evidence of God’s grace on America after World War II, and expect at least as much grace on America after World War III. So, did America receive God’s grace after World War II? Judge for yourself.

“…from the late 1940s on, young adults saw a remarkable rise in their spending power. Jobs were plentiful, wages were higher…” ~ American Experience, PBS

“Why did the U.S. economy do so well in the years following World War II given how badly it had done in the years preceding America’s entry into the war?” ~ This question and its economic answers are in “The U.S. Postwar Miracle,” by David R. Henderson, Mercatus Center, George Mason University

America received an outpouring of God’s grace after World War II.

Everything America does, even when acting contemptuously toward God, works for the good of God’s remnant within America– those who love him and are called according to his purpose. It reminds me of the remnant God remembered in Israel, even when Israelite society at large was showing contempt for God.

Don’t you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah — how he appealed to God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”? And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace. ~ Romans 11:1-6

This is grace on a national level, and we see an example of it in the USA. It is not by works, just like individual grace is not by works. Despite America’s attempts to break God’s fetters, he preserves for himself a remnant here. In America, we certainly see the hints and shadows of God’s judgment– we will indeed be rebuked, but he will sustain us for the sake of his remnant here, who are called according to his purpose. America feels his displeasure, yet we do not collapse. He preserves us by his grace, for his purpose.
