Human Nature Never Changes

They Were So Violent

A confrontation Jesus had with two violent men shows us that the Bible is 100% prophecy, and that human nature never changes.

I decided to read the Gospels again from beginning to end (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). I only got to Matthew Chapter 8 before something hit me like a bolt of lightning.

I love when that happens with the Bible. It is a living document, and it is power. No matter how many times you read a book of the Bible, God reveals more each time. It is a mine that never depletes. I knew that reading the Gospels again would reveal gems I had not noticed before. And sure enough, it happened.

In Matthew Chapter 8, Jesus is on a boat with his disciples when a bad storm hits. Jesus calms the wind and sea, which mesmerizes his disciples. Then, they arrive at their destination, Gadarenes. It is what happened next that jumped out at me. Here are the verses.

When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” ~ Matthew 8:28-29

I have read this passage of scripture so many times, but I never saw what I saw this time. Look at it again, this time with some words underlined.

We tend to think of demon-possessed people in terms of how they are portrayed in the movies. We envision them with green skin and glowing eyes. However, this is not the case at all. In fact, the demon-possessed, violent men in this passage of scripture are no different than the demon-possessed, violent men of today. The fact that people could not walk by these men for fear of random violence is no different from what we see today.

When travelling anywhere in the world, no matter what the ethnicity, and you get to a part of town that you are scared to walk through because of random violence, you are experiencing exactly the same fear instilled by these two demon-possessed men in the time of Jesus. There is no difference whatsoever. Today’s gangs and violent crime are a sign of Godlessness and demon possession, not victimhood.

Police Cars Crime Scene

It is often said that the Bible is 30% prophecy, or 60% prophecy, or some other percent prophecy. This is nonsense. The Bible is 100% prophecy! This is why we can read a passage of scripture about two violent men accosting innocent passersby 2,000 years ago, and see absolutely no difference in the behavior of human beings today. Today’s headlines scream of people murdering strangers in the pettiest of robberies, and often not even for robbery, but for absolutely no reason at all. This is demon possession – it is evil, pure and simple – just as it was in the days of Jesus.

So, what does Jesus do about this evil, about this demon possession? Let’s look at the next verses.

Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. ~ Matthew 8:30-34

This is fascinating because Jesus did not demand government money to start social programs for these demon-possessed men. Nor did he demand the banning of weapons the violent men may have been using– stones, clubs, knives. No, Jesus dealt with the problem at its root, the spiritual level, the realm of the demonic.

It is equally fascinating that in our modern society, Leftists demand removal of the Bible from public life in an attempt to eliminate the remedy proven by Jesus to cure violent crime, God! They also demand removal of guns from law-abiding citizens so that violent criminals can attack, unopposed. Leftists then exploit the air of fear they create by using it as a pretext to extort tax-payer money to institute evil social programs designed to perpetuate our gang and violence problems, while claiming to solve them. Generations of our youth face prison and early death as human sacrifices to the god of the Left, government! Indeed, Jesus gave us the template for solving our gang and violent crime problems, but the Left insists on doing the opposite of what Jesus did:

  • Jesus did not demand government money for social programs.
  • Leftists demand government money for social programs.
  • Jesus did not demand that law-abiding citizens give up their weapons.
  • Leftists demand that law-abiding citizens give up their weapons.
  • Jesus attacked the problem at its source, the demonic realm.
  • Leftists deny that this source even exists, claiming that there is no God, and that we must ban the Bible from public life.

Now, if the Left does the exact opposite of what Jesus did, which side of good and evil must I conclude that the Left is on?

The Bible is always proven true.
