It is quite striking how the USA matches so many Bible prophecies about Ephraim
Oy Vey With The Choices Already
Recently at dinner, I was actually annoyed that there were so many choices on the menu. I was having what I considered to be too hard a time deciding what to have for dinner. Let that sink in. In many nations, people struggle for their dinner every night. But there I was in the good ol’ USA annoyed at the plethora of food on my menu in the safe, clean, friendly, air conditioned restaurant.
Then there’s the grocery store. Just as I was annoyed at my restaurant menu, I’ve been annoyed at the grocery store while trying to decide on a salad dressing, or cookies, or frozen vegetables. There are so many choices that it is dizzying! These are the “problems” we have in America??? And before anyone responds that these problems are unique to me, or to a certain “class” of American, I want to shoot down that propaganda right away. Even America’s “poor” have before them an attainable selection of food and entertainment that make their lifestyles the envy of most people in the world. For crying out loud, we hear so much about the “obesity epidemic” among America’s poor. Truly poor people are not fat, they are skinny because they cannot afford food. Ask a resident of North Korea.
One Portion Above Your Brothers
So what is it about America? Our restaurant menus are annoyingly full of choices. Our grocery store shelves are annoyingly full of choices. Why are we so blessed? We have a nation that has trouble keeping people out, while other nations have trouble keeping people in. Everyone wants to be in America. Just ask the U.S. Border Patrol.
Our overflowing blessings include the most powerful military that has ever existed on earth, cars, houses, apartments, MTV Cribs, government welfare, tuition assistance, Miranda rights, sneakers that cost hundreds of dollars, the right to protest, freedom of speech, doggie daycare, central air conditioning, booze galore, weed galore, pills galore, big screen TVs, cable, video games, lottery, smart phones, overweight “poor” people, designer clothes, jewelry, gold teeth (grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom, blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room– sorry, couldn’t resist), computers, tablets, laptops, free government housing that is often nicer than the private housing surrounding it that citizens must pay for, rights for people who criminally invade our country, the right to sue prisons for not providing free sex change operations, the right to sue restaurants for serving hot coffee to people who ordered hot coffee, and most important (and absurd) of all, the right to complain about, hate, and advocate for the destruction of the very nation that hosts all these amenities. What is it about America? I’ll tell you what it is: We are blessed above every other nation on earth, period.
This brings me to one of my favorite verses in the entire Bible, Amos 3:7.
Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. ~ Amos 3:7
Simply put, if God is behind it, it’s written somewhere in the Bible. So, do we see anywhere in the Bible the pronouncement of blessings upon a people that go above and beyond the blessings pronounced for any other people on earth? Yes we do. In the forty-ninth chapter of Genesis, an aged and dying Joseph gathers his twelve sons around him and pronounces blessings upon them and their descendants.
Then Israel [Jacob] said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers. Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.” And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days: “Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father. ~ Genesis 48:21 – 49:2
Some Last Days “If/Then” Logic
Two points are essential. The first is that Jacob (Israel) has already announced that he is blessing Joseph above Joseph’s brothers. The second is that the blessings Jacob is about to pronounce specifically concern “the last days,” in other words, the end times, in other words, today! You can go to Genesis 49 on your own and read Jacob’s last-days pronouncements for Joseph’s eleven brothers. For this purposes of this post, I will concentrate only on what he told Joseph. Here is a short excerpt of what Jacob told Joseph:
The blessings of your father [That is, the blessings of Joseph’s father, Jacob.]
Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors… [Jacob is the most blessed of the Hebrew Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This is saying a lot!]
They shall be on the head of Joseph, [The overwhelming blessings God bestowed on Jacob are now transferred to Joseph.]
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers [Joseph was “separate” from his brothers by reason of the fact that he was his father’s favorite, as we can see in Genesis 37:3: Now Israel [Jacob] loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age.] ~ Genesis 49:26
Let’s use some simple “if/then” logic statements to recap what we’ve covered so far. According to Amos 3:7, if God is behind a prophetic occurrence, then it’s written somewhere in the Bible. Accordingly, if God is behind America being the most blessed nation on earth, then this exclusive blessing must be foretold in the Bible.
The piece of Genesis 49:26 I just showed is a general overview showing the magnitude of blessings bestowed upon Joseph. But Genesis and the rest of the Bible gets much more specific about these blessings. In addition, it’s not all sunshine and roses. Not only are blessings foretold, travails are also foretold. Like the blessings, the travails remarkably match only one nation on earth, the USA. I will refer to the blessings and travails foretold for Joseph’s descendants as the prophecies foretold for Joseph’s descendants. Statistically, the high quantity of these detailed last-days prophecies, combined with the high quality with which these detailed last-days prophecies match only one nation on earth, the USA, makes a compelling case that these last-days prophecies are indeed describing the USA.
Now About This “Ephraim” Character
Who is Ephraim? Ephraim is the younger of Joseph’s two sons. The older is Manasseh. Normally, a man’s blessings would have been transferred to his oldest son. But with Ephraim and Manasseh, this was not the case:
Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him. When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed. Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and will increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’ “Now then, your two sons [Manasseh and Ephraim] born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine [Wow! Remember, this is Jacob speaking, the man God renamed as Israel. He just effectively promoted Manasseh and Ephraim from grandsons to sons]; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine [Ephraim and Manasseh will each become a tribe of Israel, just as their uncles (Joseph’s brothers) are each a tribe of Israel]. Any children born to you after them will be yours… Genesis 48:1-6
In terms of what they will inherit, Jacob just promoted both Ephraim and Manasseh from grandsons to sons. Let’s see if he goes even further and promotes either Ephraim or Manasseh higher than the other.
Then Israel [Jacob] stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head [shown below], who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn [By tradition, the firstborn inherits the blessing. But Jacob knowingly and intentionally broke this tradition. He passed his blessing along not to the older brother, Manasseh (who is shown on the left below), but to the younger brother, Ephraim (who is shown on the right below).]. And he blessed Joseph, and said:
“God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has fed me all my life long to this day, The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”
But his father refused and said,”I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother [Ephraim] shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” ~ Genesis 48:1-19
State: A nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government: Germany, Italy, and other European states. ~ oxforddictionaries.com [Note how the nations of Germany and Italy are referred to as “states.” Similarly, the U.S. Department of State deals with issues not among different states, but among different nations. It could just as well be called the Department of Nations. “Nation” and “state” are synonymous. The USA is a multitude of fifty nations.]
And don’t forget, the USA is commonly called the “melting pot” in which immigrants from a multitude of nations blend together into one identity, that of the American. We are indeed a multitude of nations by reason of our fifty separate states, and the many nations that contribute to our DNA.
Joseph was to be blessed above the other eleven tribes of Israel, and above Abraham and Isaac. Joseph would then pass on this blessing to Ephraim. So far, we see that the descendants of Ephraim would be blessed above all other peoples on earth, and would “become a multitude of nations,” and this would all apply in the “last days.”
A Kingdom United
During the reigns of King David and King Solomon (David’s son), Israel was a united kingdom. Geographically, it looked like this:
A Kingdom Divided
During the reign of King Rehoboam (Solomon’s son), the kingdom split. The two southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam, but the ten northern tribes rebelled, and left the kingdom. You can read about this in 2 Chronicles, Chapters 9 and 10. After the split, the kingdom geographically looked like this:
The Kingdom of Israel split into the Kingdom of Israel (the northern kingdom), and the Kingdom of Judah (the southern Kingdom).
The nation of Israel (that is, the total nation of Israel, the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah) consists of the twelve tribes of Israel. We first see the word “Israel” in the Bible when Jacob is renamed “Israel” by God. His twelve sons (after whom the twelve Tribes of Israel are named) are:
- Joseph [Ephraim & Manasseh]
Ephraim is one of the ten northern tribes of Israel that was taken into the Assyrian captivity.
In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. [God’s chosen people and his promised land are split. They have two kings. The King of Judah rules the two southern tribes. The King of Israel rules the ten northern tribes.]
He [Hoshea, King of Israel] did evil in the eyes of the LORD, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up to attack Hoshea [King of Israel, the ten northern tribes]… and put him in prison… and deported the Israelites to Assyria… ~ 2 Kings 17:1-6
The “Lost” Tribes Of Israel
Around 100 years into the Assyrian captivity, the Assyrian Empire fell. There is no neat and clean record of the ten tribes returning to Israel, like there is of them leaving. Certainly some people returned. Others melded into the Babylonian Empire that ruled after Assyria fell. But what about the rest? Remember, we’re talking about ten tribes. Israel only had twelve. That’s 5/6! What became of them?
I believe that over time, the ten northern tribes taken into Assyrian captivity scattered all over the world. The Books of James, Peter, and 1 Maccabees seem to address these dispersed Hebrews.
James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings. ~ James 1:1 [James addresses the scattered remnant of all twelve tribes. The two southern tribes were taken into Babylonian captivity around 125 years after the ten northern tribes were taken into Assyrian captivity. The Babylonian exiles were allowed to return 70 years later. Many returned, but many chose not to.]
Jonathan the high priest [of the Jews], the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans [Sparta is in modern-day southern Greece]. Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest [of the Jews] Onias from Arius [King of the Spartans], who then reigned over you [Spartans], stating that you are our brothers… A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham. ~ 1 Maccabees 12:6-21 [This gem of a passage is sadly missing from Protestant Bibles because Protestants have allowed 1 Maccabees (as well as six other whole books, and parts of two others) to be deleted from their Bibles. The Spartans were mighty warriors, and brothers of the Jews. Their story is told in the outstanding movie 300.]
To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus [modern-day northeast Turkey], Galatia [modern-day central Turkey], Cappadocia [modern-day eastern Turkey], Asia, and Bithynia [modern-day northwest Turkey], elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. ~ 1 Peter 1:1-2
So we have a general reference to tribes scattered “abroad,” and then specific references to Greece and Turkey. Well, Turkey borders Assyria, where the ten northern tribes were taken. It is natural that many of them would have ended up in Turkey. And where is Greece? Greece just happens to be right next door to Turkey. From the area of Greece and Turkey, did some descendants of these tribes migrate westward across Europe, eventually making it to America? I believe it is a possibility. I also believe that other descendants of these tribes scattered to Africa and Asia.
Some portion of the populations of every race on earth likely has the precious DNA of these “lost” tribes of the Chosen People of Israel flowing through its veins. Two startling examples are the Ethiopian Jews of Africa, and the enormous amount of ancient Hebraic culture ingrained in modern Japanese language and culture.
For a brief but fascinating summary of the Ethiopian and Japanese links to the lost tribes, see this article by PBS’s Nova Online.
Not Lost To God
Of course, to God these “lost” tribes are not lost at all. He knows exactly where he strategically placed them, to reveal them on his schedule, for his purpose. And none of the ten “lost tribes” will play a bigger end-times role than Ephraim.
Here is where I want to leap into the Bible. The words of the Bible provide us a sample of Ephraim’s DNA. This sample consists of the detailed prophecies about his descendants. We must use this sample version of Ephraim’s DNA as the benchmark against which we compare the DNA of today’s “last days” nations, to see which one is a match. I suggest that no nation matches the Bible’s detailed prophecies about Ephraim like the United States of America. Could it be that America is a conglomeration of peoples from every race on earth who carry the ancient and abundantly blessed DNA of Ephraim? Judge for yourself.
